Camera and software search

Hello,
I am looking for an infrared thermography video/still camera to be used in testing and development at an OEM automotive exhaust supplier. I know alittle about the cameras and usage but I don't know which cameras are good. We want color and it has to be able to hook up to a computer to capture images/temps. Nobody using it (atleast for awhile) will be a certified thermographer.

It is a expensive undertaking to start an infrared program in house. I highly recomend sending one of your key people to a qualified training program, I recomend Infraspection Institute, for level I certification. In this class they will learn what kind of imagers will fit the needs of your application(long/short wave)(cooled/uncooled). There are many different kinds of imagers that can be used. I will offer one word of caution. Salesmen will be salesmen and an edgucated buyer will save you and your program money and time.

Irimage is right on the mark. Please take him seriously. I am a graduate of Infraspection Institute and did not pick my imager until I had graduated. I have never regreted it. Part of their course teaches you what questions need to be asked to pick the imager most suited for your use and they do not tout one imager over the other as an all inclusive device. You know what to ask, how to dicker and how to respond to the department head or higher questions of why your choice verses something they may have been told by good sales reps.

Don't know if you hi-tech professionals will respond to this - but my interest is at the other end of the spectrum.

would like to know of low cost equipment ( perhaps using optic fibers ) that would allow us to get temperatures across a tire ( while it is racing on a track ) say 5 to 6 points would be sufficient and we could accept a mulitplexing set-up [ i.e. one reader for the multi points ] . if this could sork we could add fiber points to the other wheels and then move the connection to survey the tires over time and at different conditions.

I have one of those early sony camcorders that will take pictures in the dark and in normal pictures it does show contrast to a degree [ no not really "a degree" : - ) ] but i asume it could give a qualitative vision that we could alibrate by quickly taking contact checks. but the actual readouts of an "official?" a non contact pyrometer eoulf be much preferred
