Can a coupling be welded to head skirt?

Hello all,

Can anyone point me in the right direction about welding a coupling or small size nozzle to a skirt of a weld cap (if it is addressed and/or permissible at all) in Section VIII, Div. 1? My assumption is that it is not permissible, but I thought I would ask.

The code does not prevent you to weld the nozzle or coupling on the "skirt" of the dished end;- it allows you even to weld it in the middle of the weld of the dished end to the shell. Obviously, there are conditions to comply with, the first one being proper engineering, taking in account the consequences of the failure of such joint. You have to be satisfied of that (with supportive calculations, proper material selection, follow the code requirements, etc..), the strength of the joint is not compromised and you have sufficient reinforcement for that area.

There is no problem welding to the skirt (straight flange) of a head or pipe cap. If the nozzle falls in the circ. seam refer to UW-14.
