Hi experts,

The question is that, can we use TEMA to design shell and tube heat exchanger if the design pressure is over 3000 psi?
My understanding is that if the design pressure is higher than 3000 psi (TEMA limit) we can't use TEMA to calculate the tube sheet or any pressured parts. However, it still can use TEMA for structure configuration of the heat exchanger. All pressure parts design shall be as per ASME VIII-1 & VIII-2 if applicable. Am I correct?

Thanks.

Unless there is some detail in the configuration that violates ASME rules sure you can.
But as it turns out people generally don't do this because there are more efficient configurations at high pressures.

mechengineer, TEMA scope regarding pressure permits product of pressure x diameter of 100,000, see RCB-11.1(2). This reflects the fact that smaller vessels are different than larger ones. Perhaps your vessel meets this limitation. Like Code (U-1(d)) it has a scope limit of 3000 psi. But many vessels in excess of 3000 psig have been and will be designed to Sec VIII Div 1.

Pressure boundary components including tubesheets would be designed to Code. TEMA rules, for the most part, address details not otherwise addressed by Code. Therefore the balance of the HX details could be designed to TEMA rules regardless of design pressure. My opinion. Best of luck :)

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand
