Canadian Building Code (2005) Seismic Load

Hello,

I'm relatively new to using STAAD but I seem to be having some trouble generating the loads under for NBCC 2005 (Canadian Building Code) for seismic loading. I am trying to enter them in using the setup explained in the technical file para. 5.31.2.11 but am not having much luck.

The load definition that gets pulled up for the 2005 edition looks like the method of loading used in the 1995 edition. I've tried entering the loads in manually into the input file and get syntax errors for the seismic load.

Has anyone else come across this? Was there a patch released that fixed this? If not, how do people enter in the 2005 building code seismic loads?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm desperate here!

Hi reesh,

I struggled with this for a while. I believe the problem is that when we select NBC 2005 it doesnt actually select it and as a result it asks for NBC '95 parameters. Here is how I defined my loading for STAAD seismic load generation. You could put this in and go into the GUI and change the values to suite your project.

DEFINE NRC 2005 LOAD
SA1 0.28 SA2 0.17 SA3 0.11 SA4 0.063 IE 1.3 SCLASS 3 MVX 1.2 MVZ 1.2 JX 0.7 -
JZ 0.7 RDX 4 RDZ 4 ROX 1.5 ROZ 1.5

Also dont forget to define the following in load defention once you are able to select NBC 2005.
- joint weight
- selft weight
- member weight
- floor weight

Also, dont forget to input each seismic load under the 'load cases details' in both directions (e.g. +X seismic force and -X seismic force). Once you set up +X force then you can use auto load generation to have staad consider the +X and -X forces.
