Dear all engineers,

I have an enquiry which requires the design temperature of the metal at 350 degC. However, the minimum design ambient temperature is around -30 degC. We need to comply to EN13445-2 for material selection in this enquiry.

Therefore, may I know which carbon steel of EN-material I can use for my design? Is that any carbon steel material that can suit for -30 degC as well as extreme high temperature like 350 degC?

Your final selection will be driven by the minimum service temperature of -30 deg C. The maximum temperature of 350 deg C is well within the acceptable range for structural steel.

Thanks for your reply, I guess my question isn't clear. The product form required for the service is seamless tube. I am proposing EN10216-2 P265GH, but I found out that it is not suitable for using at MDMT colder than -10 degC. Do you know anymore material that can withstand for the temperature range of -30 degC to 350 degC? Perhaps something like EN10216-3 P275NL1?

I don't have access to the referenced standards you mentioned. Select the carbon steel that is qualified for -30 deg C. The 350 deg C maximum temperature will not be a factor. Make sure the allowable stress values are acceptable.
 
If the low temperature storage is not a pressurized case, it's not a design case and doesn't affect the selection of the material for that service.

If you store the article empty, and there is no loading, it can go below -30 C and nobody will care.

If you intend to store the article PRESSURIZED at -30 C, then you're out of luck- you either need a "killed" carbon steel like A333 or you need to consider an austenitic SS etc.

We see this all the time- people wanting to design water lines for minimum ambient temperature for example. If you let the water freeze in the line, it will rupture irrespective of what the design temperature minimum of the material might be!

Please see the attached data sheet for your reference. It's the data sheet from Valleeuwen Pipes web site plus additional information posted at the website of Thyssen Krupp.As you can see EN10216-2 P265GH is essentially an equivalent grade to A/SA 106 GrB.

For a regular pressurized temperature swing from +350 Deg C to -30 Deg C A106Gr B may not have enough notch-ductility(impact)and may be a concern. For occasional swing this material may be a fit, however some impact data would be advisable. Or else your better choice would be tubing conforming to A 333 Gr6 or P 265NL.
