Hello everyone..

Can somebody please offer me some advice.. I had job interviews at an oil sevices company for a positon in 2 different services (DST operator& wireline operator)

I'm not sure which one to choose. I am a mechanical engineer with 2 years of experience but not in oil field.

I heard that being a Field specialist opens up many door and there's room for growth..

And in terms of salary, which one pays better?..

I'd really appreciate it if somebody can help me clear up my thoughts..

Thank You

Hmm, well there are lots of avenues in which to chose for a career, both of your options open up different doors. I work for a company that offers wireline services and we run a wireline unit (although this is not the majority of our business, we are a fishing company and typically work thru-tubing fishing operations as the fishing supervisor or motor services while having a seperate CT company provide the CT services). So I can tell you what wireline can do for you. The nature of that work is different, being a mech E guy, you'll have an advantage when it comes to strength of materials and stuff like that because most of your tools will be designed by mechanical engineers. Field work in wireline operations offer you the ability to see a lot of different types of work. Fishing, remedial well work, shifting tools, etc. It's a pretty versatile position. DST kinda pigeon holes you a bit. That's just my opinion, kinda biased, but wireline is a good route to pursue.

Abd74 ,

i am agree with tylang06 that wireline is good option in both avenue of getting good money and career. But it's hardworking sometimes as you never know about working time. mostly DST works during day time, but being wireline operator you have to be ready for 24*7.

good luck,

Are there man options for a mechanical engineer with some experience to start out at a pretty decent level?

As a generalization, is it better to be from a chemical engineering background?
