Hi, everyone. I just recently got accepted to UT's undergraduate Petroleum Engineering school. I was wondering how realistic it is for me to find a job after college that doesn't force me to leave the country for long periods of time. Are there any petro jobs that would allow me to be able to go home everyday? If not, what is the typical work schedule like? Any information is greatly appreciated.

That all depends on where you want to call home.

Hate to say it, but in a few months lots of Petroleum Engineers may be at home every day; like it or not.

And a lot with any kind of a "geo" prefix as well.

Thanks, all. I'm considering changing my major to Aerospace engineering because it seems to fit a lot of the things I want, such as better job security, less traveling, and being more physics-based.

That's ironic. I was aerospace until I switched. Careful. Aerospace is a cyclical business too.
My best advice is to be what you want to be and don't let anybody talk you out of it. Everything seems to be cyclical these days. .coms, energy, mining, airlines, chocolate...
Just find something you like to do and do it well. Very well.

Sounds like you haven't really thought out what is important to you. What is so imperative about being home every night. You'll learn more on a 2-3 month field assignment than you would in 2 years stuck in the office, probably have more fun in the field, and have a much higher potential salary. Is mummy's cooking really that good?
