What is your educational background? If you don't have an ABET accredited degree, it's probably the place to start. Also, what is it you want to do?

All that depends on what you want to do and where you want to go. Getting an ABET accredited degree is a good start. That opens some doors.

If you want to go the technician route, get DOT certified for inspections and testing.

I did geotech work for about a year after college. I found the experience to be valuable. Its always good to get some field expericence, see how things are built, and see how soils and concrete react in the field. Field and lab experience will be good for you either way, on the tech. path or an engineering path.
