Hi,

I am Currently designing some new fittings for the ends of a race car wishbone. The current fitings are machined 1018 mild steel but require alot of fabrication processes to fit to the wishbone. I have started looking at using a 4130 casting as a replacement but am stuggling to find any material properties to base my design (FEA) upon. Currently I am using Cast fittings in the end of my Pushrods which are Heat treated: - Normalised @ 900 deg/C, Air cooled, hardened and tempered to 25-29 HRC.

Any information On minimum values of cast 4130, the effects of heat treatment or advice on using a cast material as a load bearing component etc will be gratefully reieved.

Many Thanks in advance!!!

Your question seems a bit vague to me. So I am not sure if what I am going to say here help or not.

4130 is an excellent choice for heat treatment and load bearing application, should be much better than 1018. It can give you a wide range of properties while differently heat treated. For example, you can get HRC between 25 and 40.

But really you need to share what is the size and mechanical properties, and you application...

Hi Salmon,

Thankyou for your response! Sorry if a bit vague.

The main reason for the post is to gain information concerning the material properties of CAST 4130. in it's un-treated state and also after heat treating such as the example given in my original post.

Thanks again

Basically I would like some Data on the Tensile and Yield strengths of CAST 4130 before and after various Heat treatment conditions.

The mechanical properties of cast 4130 refer to the separately cast test bars and not of the casting. Also please do remember that the casting might introduce to you several other inconsistencies like micro shrinkage, cracks, voids, etc. Factor these effects too in your design as castings can have several defects which can affect performance.

Also have a good NDT evaluation of your cast parts..

arunmrao,

Yes thanks. I am in talks with my supplier and am having several prototypes construceted with various degrees of heat tratment and a few variations in Cast shape so that i can carry out some physical testing.
