cast resin transformer in outdoor enclosure (UK)

I need to spec and buy a transformer to supply a new plant that we are putting in a remote corner of an existing site. All existing transformers on site are dry types, and site engineers prefer to keep this new one similar. I have looked at GRP enclosures (plus suitable IP rated enclosure around tx)as used by the UK utilities for unit substations, but these seem to use oil transformers inside (but curiously I can't see any oil bund on their foundation drawings). I guess utilities use oil transformers due to cost? None of the suppliers I've approached so far have been able to offer tx and enclosure. So, can a cast resin tx go in this type of enclosure? I've put them many times into rooms with louvred external walls, and this doesn't seem much different. Tx is 1600kVA, 11/0.433V. TIA, Brian

The cast resin transformers can be placed indoors or outdoors. They will cost significantly more than an oil-filled unit.

Have you spoken to Schneider at Leeds, Areva at Stafford, and maybe ABB at Sunderland?

Thanks for replies. Although cost is always a factor, I need to try and fit in with current equipment on site. I have tried Schneider and ABB, both of whom offered only a standard indoor type enclosure. Looks like I will have to get a GRP enclosure myself. Any comments on using cast resin tx in these gratefully received. Thanks again, Brian

I work for Ritz in the US and I'm 99% sure we can provide cast-coil xfmr in outdoor enclosures.

Putting cast-coil xfmr outside should not be a problem at all. Maybe you need to talk to someone else at ABB.

A rare piece of advice: phone schneider at Leeds and ask them to get a salesman to contact you. They make packaged substations for indoor / outdoor locations.

There are others who could offer this, as Scotty said. Also try Brush at Loughborough

As an aside, we are moving over to Midel (KNAN), midel is a flame resistant, biodegradable liquid.

We have nothing against cast resin units, only that you have no pre warning of failure.
