Can we heat treat A216 Gr WCB to meet Stainless Steel NACE requirement? If we could heat treat, what type of heat treatment or temperature do we require to perform?

Please give me a detail answer. Give me an oppotunity for this rookie to shine herself...hihihi....

I am not sure of what you are asking. If after welding you intend to solution anneal the complete stainless/carbon steel weldment, high stress will be incurred at the stainless/carbon steel fusion line. Welding procedures would need to be qualified with this proposed heat treatment. It is not normal practice to post weld heat treat this dissimilar weld to the stainless solution treatment. You must also consider any applicable Code requirements.

Please provide futher information.

I'm not sure what you are asking either, but are you inquiring about whether WCB can be heat treated to meet the hardness requirements of a NACE spec, such as MRO175? (which happens to include some stainless steels?)

Groberts,

That is the exact answer I am looking for. Thank you very much. You are on the right track, but could you be more specific about MRO1975.

Stanweld,

Thank you for your explanation about the welding procedures for heat treatment.

The hardness requirements MR0175 can readily be met, with or without PWHT, depending on thickness of the joint and welding process. PWHT hold temperature, if required, is 1100 F minimum. If the thickness is less than about 5/8" no PWHT should be needed unless you weld with GMAW, short circuiting transfer process.

With proper preheating, you can safely meet NACE without PWHT to the Code mandated thickness requiring PWHT.

NACE MRO175 is a specification for sour service. You really need to know what specifications apply because there are different NACE specifications for different service environments.
