Change *DISTRIBUTION between steps to achieve a time-dependent element-wise field (ABAQUS)?

I have a field that is defined elementwise, i.e. each element has a scalar value associated with it.
To do this I use *DISTRIBUTION.
I want this modify this distribution across a step.
Ideally I'd like to add an amplitude to this distribution to achieve this, but it looks like this isn't supported.

The other option I considered is to use a *FIELD with the AMPLITUDE=amplitude_name option. But it seems fields defined this way can only be done at nodes, which is not what I want.

Any ideas?

What kind of field do you want to prescribe this way ? It may require a subroutine. Are you aware of the *EXTERNAL FIELD keyword in recent Abaqus versions ?
