Hello Everyone,

We are SAWH pipe manufacturer, we carryout repair welding of API 5L Gr. X-70 pipes with Electrode E-9018. Please let me know, can we use electrode E-8018 instead of E-9018 on API 5L Gr. X-70 pipes. if yes, is re-qualification required.

Product standard is silent about it.

Regards

My assumption is that you are manufacturing this pipe to API 5L; The short answer is that you cannot substitute E9018 with E8018 without re-qualifying the welding procedure. API 5L, Annex D.2.2.c.1 provides guidance.

As a pipe manufacturer, why would you not re-qualify your repair procedure when changing from E9018 to E8018, especially on high grade piping such as X70? Even of Code allows you to do so, the risk vs. reward seems obvious...

Agree with above, if you re-qualify your repair welding procedure with 8018 electrode, you can use it.
