It is my understanding that once a file is opened in a newer release and saved, it is no longer usable by the older version. This has to do with the newer versions having a different toolset than the older versions, the program can't read the new file because it no longer recognizes the tools (even if none of the new tools were used to edit the model).

is there any way i can atleast save it so that the teacher that i have can at least see that i have done the assignment or can it be opened in mechanical desktop instead of inventor 10

Is the file an IPT or IAM, or is it an IDW? If it is an IDW you can save it as a DWG and open it in Mech Desktop. If it is a model, you can save it as a STEP or a SAT and open it in Mech Desktop. Another option would be to download the free Inventor 11 viewer from the Autodesk website. Your last option would be, if it is an IDW, to save it as a DWF if your teacher has a DWF viewer (also free from Autodesk, Autodesk Design Review). Unfortunately though, no, there is no way to open an inventor 11 file directly in inventor 10.

thanks youve been a big help for me i have also heard that there is a way you can downlowd inventor 10 for a free 30 day trial do you know where i can down laod it from and point me in that direction

You can get Inventor 11 off of the Autodesk website, but I don't know of anywhere you can get Inventor 10 as a trial being as it is now 2 revisions out of date.

As a student you can download Inventor 10 or 11 for free from but I don't see how that is going to solve your problem if you have already done your work in r11 and the teacher only has r10. You could do all future work in r10 but otherwise use one of the solutions suggested. You teacher should have been able to give you the solutions suggested. The major problem that could arise is the the teacher needs to see the feature tree to see how you built the model. Faculty can also download r11 from the site given for their home computer.

If visibility of the model tree is required print a screen shot and give that to your instructor as well.

That might help, but as an instructor first thing I want to check is the sketch constraints and then the assembly constraints.
