Changing datums and isolating elements 1

I have a Catpart that I received from a customer. The zero point is way out in space and I'm trying to shift the part so that I can use a local coordinate system. When I place the compass on the part and use the edit command, I get an error message stating that I'm trying an impossible move, that some items are fixed, i.e. the XY YZ and ZX datum planes and some points out in space. The message also states that I can isolate or replace them with Datum elements. However, I can only isolate the points, but not the datum planes, and I can't seem to create new datums. How can I work around this? All I really need to do is create a zero point on the part.

I don't use the compass, so I can't help with that process.
You can create a new local axis off of features of the part.
If all you want is to create a "zero" point, you can use the point coordinate command and select a vertex of the part.

I have to create a local align axis on parts for our CMM group and provide them with an IGES file in that axis. 1st you create the A/P axis. Then create the local part axis through the align features. Transform the part from the local to the A/P axis (hide initial element) and IGES out.
