Hi,

Can someone help me with searching API requirements for Charpy testing? I need to know requirements of impact energy for temperatures from 20 til -60 for laser/arc hybrid welded X70.

Thanks in advance.

Requirements will depend on the applicable Code e.g. ASME B31.3 You can also try API 5L.

Thanks, but in API 5L is just mentioned measurements of Charpy samples, location, etc. I need values to compare my results.

Agree with ijzer. You should verify the applicable design code such as ASME B31.3 or your client specifications for the acceptance criteria.

I'm not sure whether the latest release of the API 5L does not give acceptance criteria for impact testing. For grade X70 you should also know the PSL as per API 5L.

Good luck.

There are no easy answers to your question and I assume that you are asking it with regard to selling X70 Line pipe with your welding process. For cross country line pipe, Owner/Operators normally define the impact toughness requirements depending on operating conditions (temp., pressure, gas or liquids carrying, etc.)diameter, and thickness. Impact testing with calculated absorbed energy values may be required to assure fracture arrest in a large diameter gas pipe line.

To arrest crack like flaws at high applied stress levels, absorbed energy of 30 to 35 ft-lbs (Charpy V-notch)were often specified at the minimum design temperature if the design stress was 70% of the SMYS for X70 pipe.
