Does anyone know a method or procedure on how to insulate chilled water pipe that is not dry, still active (wet)? I think when installing pipe insulation normally the surface should be dry. We are working on a project were we are installing bolt-on hot taps and can not have a shut-in. Appreciate any advise.

For your wet application: What you can replace it with will likely be determined by the size of the pipe. You are looking for something that will provide insulation and a vapor barrier. Closed cell foam provides both when taped. Closed cell foam installs quickly, is durable, and unaffected by moisture. It's a good choice if you can find the size that fits your pipe. If the pipes are large, look into a cellular glass product. The manufacturer or local distributor is going to be your best source for installation procedures for their product.

bimr,
Thank you for your response. We are dealing with 6" pipe and good info. I think will contact a local distributor for my application.

Thanks,

Walter

If you can isolate the area with a tent etc and then hire a decent de-humidifier unit you would reduce or possibly eliminate the condensation long enough to dry the pipe and paint it or coat it with something decent.

But agree that foamglas is pretty decent stuff and a bit of condensation under it probably won't do it any harm, but might stop the glue they normally use from working.
