Dear Experts:

I have been asked to find a way to remove chlorides from 2.1 million gallons of petroleum contact wastewater. Chlorides must be reduced from 850 mg/l to 500 mg/l (Cl-). This project is a one time treatment and discharge. Therefore, both RO and Ion Exchange are not economically feasable. Evaporation is not a viable option. Silver chloride and/or lead chloride precipitation are obviously not workable options. I have seen several references to Ultra HIgh Lime with Alumina Treatment but have not found a good description of how or if it works. Is there any other method of removing chlorides from water???? Better yet, is there a referance available that compares and contrasts the various methods on one text??????

Thanks in advance

I've always heard that there was no practical way to remove chlorides from wastewaters like the wastewater you discuss, but I did find the following article on the web. Perhaps the batch process is something that can be used to drive the chlorides down enough to allow discharge?

From the website -
Chloride Removal:

HPT Research, Inc. is presently engaged in a R & D project for the removal of salt from water. Excellent reductions of chlorides have been achieved in both bench top and pilot plant tests of food processing brine solutions. Between 90% to 94% reductions in chlorides and BOD have been realized in the pilot plant treatment of olive brine solutions. The process is presently being tested for possible use in the pre-treatment of ocean water prior to Reverse Osmosis Desalinization. Initial results indicate the HPT Salt Removal process has the potential of increasing the efficiencies and economies of Reverse Osmosis desalinization.

Thanks for the response SharkswithLasers. To the best of my knowledge there is no other way to remove chlorides from this type of water. But... I wanted to double check just in case.
