How do you know the right steel to use in a small structure. for example for a single braced tube (1.5m) what section would be appropriate? what about column of 5m. what about the roof truss members what chs is appropriate? Reason im asking is because i cant find any useful resource online that tells sections of hollow steel and their application in a structure.

You choose the size based on the requirements.

Generally a good place to start for the members you describe is looking at the slenderness ratio, choosing the smallest size that meets that demand and checking it against the loads.

sometimes column sizing is dictated by the architect in the sense that I have at times increased the column size to meet the architectural intent.
 
Thanks slide for the links you sent and Jay. i didn't see exactly what I was looking for like diameter and thickness that can be used for bracing, beams and columns small structure. Im looking for were to start so I add load and increase the sizes from there. theres no requirements for choosing a section for now just have to the reasonable and I add load. the image (I found from the link) I attached what do you think the diameter and thickness of the brace steel are?

I have no idea what size those are. It would depend on the spans etc. Like I said, generally my way of getting a starting point is to choose a size that meets the slenderness requirements (kl/r) and then see how that responds to the design loads. If it is inadequate for the design loads, then I increase accordingly.
 
also, for easier field installation, square tubing may be more efficient by providing flatter surfaces for bracing mentioned by shazamwizard.

You appear to be trying to "design structures by standard table" from the internet. Your questions do not show that you have the qualifications and background and training to safely analyze the proposed structures.

Get a structural engineer.
