Hi I am very new to the world of civil engineering. I am basically tasked with teaching myself the basics. However in my studies I have come across the term "General Arrangement Drawing". This might be a term you are all very familiar with but having no background in the field I am struggling to find the difference between regular architectural drawings. From all indication, they seem to be the same thing as the plans completed by drafting technicians. So my question is, how do general arrangement drawings differ from regular plans done by drafting technicians. For example: what is the difference between a foundation plan for a building, and a general arrangement drawing of a foundation? The same thing goes for a sectional elevation done by architects and a general arrangement elevation? If you could include images showing the differences, that would be lovely. Thank you.

The Architectural drawing could be considered as a general arrangement drawing. It shows an overall layout of the 'components'. A site plan, also, could be considered as one, but not normally. The 'main' drawing is what the foundations, floor framing, upper floor(s) framing and roof framing are based on. Sections and details are then made from thise ancilliary (sp?) plans.

Don't feel ignorant about this term. Way back in time I took a few terms of drafting for civil engineering but not then or even since that term has never come up,so define it as you will.

Right on... I worked as an engineer for 25 years before I came across the term GA drawings...

GA drawing are common on industrial projects. On just a few drawings, the GAs show how civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, etc. components and systems are laid out, but with only a few dimensions and other details. The GAs are used both to give an overall idea of what the project will look like and to allow engineers from various disciplines to see how their work fits into the completed project.
