Hi All,

I am currently in dilemma in selecting the correct clamp meter for AC&DC.

Option 1) with True RMS feature
Option 2) without True RMS feature

The purpose of this clamp meter is for me to use it during WPS qualification of GTAW,SMAW and FCAW. Does any of the option above will affect WPS qualification.

All the process in WPS stated using DC current.

I read from internet that RMS is used to check the accurate value of voltage and current for Alternate form. I am not sure it will affect my qualification of WPS or not if i am using clamp meter without True RMS feature.

Thanks in advance for reply.

RMS applies to alternating current.

Rectified AC, such as that used for welding may have some ripple, but it not enough to cause a concern. If the tong meter has a digital display, the reading will vary somewhat as the welder is welding. The person using the meter will have to "average" the readings. Likewise with an analog meter. The needle will vary as the welder is welding. Average the high and low as the welder deposits the weld. Ignore the reading for the first 30-seconds or so to let the arc stabilize.

Meters reading direct current will vary as well. That is just the nature of the beast.

Best regards - Al
