Class 1 Division 2 certification 1

Hi,
I am working on trying to get our motors certified as Class 1 division 2. I looked into UL and CSA website and trying to figure out what type of requirement we need to meet for the motors be certified as Class 1 div 2, however I didn't find a whole lot. Is there any requirement data or document I can find somewhere? I am trying to understand what type of eletrical and mechanical perfermace does the eletric motors need to be certified as Class 1 division 2.

As long as your motor does not have spark producing contacts the NEC does not require the use of a motor listed or certified for use in a Class I, Division 2 area.

501.125(B) ... In Class I, Division 2 locations, the installation of open or nonexplosionproof enclosed motors, such as squirrel-cage induction motors without brushes, switching mechanisms, or similar arc-producing devices that are not identified for use in a Class I, Division 2 location, shall be permitted.

Hi ssstern,

ResQCapt19 is right -- we don't see a lot of motors labeled for Div 2, because the label typically isn't required.

You should be able to submit your motor to Factory Mutual, UL, or the appropriate lab in your location to get certification that it meets the code (no contacts, no brushes, no arcing, no sparking). Then you'll have certification and can label it...

CSA does have testing and approval standards. CSA tests for mtrs skin temperatures (T-code) and for space heaters (again for T-code rating)
