I am working on a project. I need a mechanism (probably a valve) that releases the Carbon dioxide out of a CO2 cartridge only when a trigger is pressed, and in very short bursts. The mechanism can be no larger than 20mm in length and 8mm in width. Please respond with solutions on the market.

More details please: pressure, delta P, amount of gas, time, pressure or amount regulated, hand or automatic, el., air. etc. At smaller openings icing could complicate closing.

The mechanism's function will be as a propellant for an oral product. The super cool expelled gas is purposeful for the concept design. The CO2 cartridge has 8 grams (Amount of gas) of CO2 and an inlet pressure of 850 psi (Pressure). With the variable being the size of the orifice and time for the opening, ideally I want to achieve an outlet pressure of 20-40 psi (Delta P) for .33 seconds (Time) displacing 1/100 up to 5/100 (Amount regulated) of the 8 grams of CO2. It needs to be manually operated.

I can see why you have problems, and cannot find any existing commercial product. Nearest would probably be through a supplier of dentist equipment.

Micro check-valves within your measurements and pressure restrictions exist. Perhaps a standard micro check-valve could be modified to suit your purpose?

See for instance attached link.

Suggestion: connect your cartridge to the spring-actuated side of the valve. Cap the front end to make it gas-thigt. Make an outlet opening for released gas in the cap, or near the cap sidewise. Release the gas by adding a hand operated device to force the checkvalve's ball backward to open against the spring and gas pressure. Release the hand operated device (lever? push-button spindle? spring assisted?) and the spring will close the ball, helped by the gas pressure.
