Hi all,

What coating would be used for field girth weld for a 16" pipeline, design temperature of 85C, coated with a dual-layer fusion bond epoxy. Shrink sleeve, epoxy kit?

Thank you very much.

Thank you for you replies. What would be best for such a situation? Shrink sleeve or liquid epoxy?

I like shrinks, but your guys have to be smart enough to put them on first. Maybe you wanna' have some of both on hand, if you know what I mean.

You can review DNV-RP-F102 for the range of selection of field joint coatings (you don't say onshore or offshore)

although it won't tell you which ones to select for dual layer FBE factory coating. Apparently, field application of the same dual layer FBE coating is not under consideration; perhaps it should be?

Whatever you choose, make sure that it first has been laboratory qualified by the manufacturer and has a track record and then make sure that you qualify the field application procedure and the personnel in a yard before letting them loose on the spread or the back of the barge.

Thank you all. A STAR for SJones for his detailed reply.

If you do elect to use a coating rather than a sleeve for your girth welds, you may want to consider using a grout first to smooth out any holidays in the weld area prior to applying an epoxy protective top coat. For example, the designer of a mainline externally coated with Devran 224 HS epoxy coating could stipulate the following two part joint coating kit:

•Enviroline 124 Epoxy Grout Coating Kit followed by Devoe Bar-Rust 235 Epoxy Coating Kit

The coatings referenced in the above example have maximum operating temperatures > 85C.

I can tell you, that we have outlawed the use of shrink sleeves for permanent installations...above or below ground.

I am wondering in what part of the world this has happened and why?

Thanks,

The sale os Scotchkote has been halted in about 10 states due to issues with the VOC content, as of June 1, 2011. Bummer.
