Our seal water coolers for the boiler circulating water pumps (BWCP) take their seal water supply from the suction of the BWCP. The BWCP has suction and discharge isolation valves and the seal water take off is between the suction isolation valve and the pump suction.

Does the seal water cooler need to be ASME Section VIII Div 1?

Where in the ASME BPV is this discussed?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Read Sec VIII U1(C)(2)to see if Sec VIII applies. Your cooler may be too small.

Thanks smithcl

The cooler is greater than 6" ID.

I was thinking that perhaps U-1(c)(2)(c) would apply since the cooler is required for the pump to operate. That would seem to satisfy the "integral part or component" phrase. The design requirements for the cooler are "derived" from the sealing requirements.

Any thoughts?

I seriously doubt if "required to operate" and "requirements derived from" would be criteria for applicability of the code. In at least a broad sense, every equipment connected would be part of the "process conditions" that dictate the design, but all of them do not necessarily have to be considered as integral parts or components of the equipment in question.
Only the AI should be able to determine if the pump is to be treated as a component.
