We have an Air Handling unit which we have recently converted from steam to Natural Gas by replacing the steam coils with the Indirect Fired heat exchanger. The unit is 60,000 cfm. We want to install smoke detectors in it, 2 before the heat exchanger and 1 before the fan. I just wanted to know that installing these smoke detectors falls under which code? If somebody could tell me exactly that would be really appreciated.

P.S I am looking for Canadian Codes. Thanks

Smoke detectors are required in the return side by the IMC 606.2.1. I'm not sure, but I think NFPA 90 has some requirements for detectors as well.

You are right. Smoke detectors are required in Air Conditioning and Ventilation systems having a capacity greater than 2000 cfm.
Thanks a lot.

The Florida Building Code requires the smoke detector in the supply, to protect against fires in the HVAC system and outside air. Area detectors protect inside. NFPA gives additional guidance on placement in supply or return.
