COAL AND NATURAL GAS PRODUCE ETHANOL
Unhappily Coal is totally misunderstood, its real value is totally undiscovered, despite that scientific progress is claiming maturity and nothing is still left behind unnoticed.

Coke and Natural Gas= Ethylene Gas(hydration)= Ethanol
C + CH4 = C2H4 +H2O = C2H5OH

Coal can produce an affective liquid fuel (Ethanol), in abundance, as Crude petroleum Oil produces gasoline.
Crude Petroleum took all the privilege and recognition, while coal is left behind unnoticed.

The reason is: During WWII two German Scientists Fischer and Tropsh came up the idea of reacting Coal with oxygen and steam producing a mixture of gases mainly hydrogen and carbon monoxide. If we apply such a reaction to crude petroleum, we would have destroyed the value of crude petroleum also.

Coal, as crude petroleum, consists of a mixture of several organic compounds. Also, as crude petroleum, it needs to have these compounds separated first. The solid residue of destructive distillation of coal is Coke. This coke reacts with natural gas (methane) to produce Ethylene gas. Ethylene is valuable, and is the well known raw material for ethanol.

The reaction of Coke and natural Gas is described in both Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry and Kirk and Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology (under Acetylene, as it is produced by the same process). If we had this ethanol from coal, NO energy crisis could be substantiated???

More details are cited in several websites, two of them are and also several blogs are also posted two of them are ethanol-from-coal-and-natural-gas.blogspot.com and coal-replaces-crude-oil-exploration.blogspot.com

Very interesting post! I have heard a bit about this topic here and there, but it never seems to take hold. Are the costs involved in producing ethanol on a commercial scale from coal astronomical? Are there environmental constraints? Or has the idea just not taken hold with mainstream politics and society?

Thanks,

NGB

why not just make methanol from the methane. Its a lot more efficient.

Are the costs involved in producing ethanol on a commercial scale from coal astronomical?

On the contrary, it can not be much easier, the plant itself is minute it mainly consists out the storage areas for coke, coal, natural gas, and ethanol.

Are there environmental constraints?

No, there are no emissions, it simply consists out of two addition reactions. The first one Coke + Natural Gas,
the second one Ethylene + H2O.

Has the idea just not taken hold with mainstream politics and society?

Yes, this is true, however now crude oil is bidding farewell from all oil producing oil wells. Crude Oil reserves are now exhausted. The world consumption is huge and it equals to 80 million barrel per day.

Unhappily changing from one resource to another is not easy, a major catastrophe is expected if we continue on this situation.

Why not just make methanol from methane. Its a lot efficient?

Scientifically you are correct, however methanol is poisonous, ethanol is not. If ethanol is finding difficulties to reach the market, then methanol will face much more.

One more point against methanol is its combustion and volatility characteristics. Out of all the available fuels only iso-octane and ethanol which are providing favorable performance for the 4 stroke engine, even n-octane is excluded.
