Hi All,

Just need a general clarification on a structural note that mentions bolted collector connection (at steel beam to steel column), I was unable to find any detail on contract documents, is this something related to the reactions of the beam? or Do I have to connect it for axial loads? Drop your thoughts, please.

Thanks in advance!!

Your assumption is correct: The connection probably must be designed for beam axial load along with shear. Look on the plans for some indication of the axial force on these beams.

I'd guess that would indicate a connection through which axial loads will be moved in or out of a horizontal framing member. It would be helpful to see an instance of this in plan.

My assumption is that the intent is for the connections on this beam to have standard bolt holes (as opposed to short slotted). If the contract drawings don't provide you with an axial force to design for, then I'd send the EOR an RFI. I'm assuming you're the steel connection engineer in this scenario?
