Dear Forum,

Like any other petrochemical plant, we have plenty of piping in the plant consisitng of Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel & Staniless steels.

Could some one guide me where i can refer the right color coding for all such items? we neeed to identify the piping and fittings with the relevant color code in order to ensure the usage of pipes and fittings at the right place.

I never preferred color coding for reasons of having to deal with the approximately 12 - 20 percent (depending on whose figures you want to believe) of the white, male population and a tiny fraction of the female population that are color blind.

For small items such as electrical wiring....it is more appropriate but for large items....I think another system would be preferred..... Just my opinion.....

Check to see if you are color blind.....

If it is only for materials identification, rather than fluid service identification, you should be able to make up your own colour code, publish it as an internal standard and then ensure that it is followed. Of course, if you are also operating a colour coding system for fluid service, then things might get tricky.

Thanks CodeJackal, dbaired,SJones and TTT,

good inputs from all of you....

I agree with SJones..I am looking forward for materiaa identification to control right usage. so it is better to develop an internal color coding system & publish.

To avoid color blindness effect.......better to chose colors in contrast.....because matching colors create confusion for the paople with color blindness.......mild or severe...!

PFI Std ES-22 can be used or devise your own based on your needs as per SJones.
