I am looking for the best method to determine Pcrit for a beam with a variable cross-section. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Australian Bridge Design Code gives the following formula for a reinforced concrete column:

Nc = (pi^2/Le^2)*(200*d*.6*Mub)/(1+Beta_d) where

Nc = Buckling load
Pi = pi or 22/7
Le = effective length of column
d = depth to outermost layer of tensile steel
Mub = moment corresponding to nuetral axis depth of 0.6*d
Beta_d = ratio of dead load to total load.

Hope this helps!
The Structural Stability Research Council (SSRC) "Guide to Stability Design Criteria for Metal Structures" would be a good reference. I think the latest (5th?) edition was edited by Galambos. I found it once in a local university library.

Indian Standards Gives a method for the design of slender RCC Columns subjected to biaxial bending. I have a software called COLDES which is capable of designing such columns. email me roynshenoy@vsnl.com or visit and see the software section.
