what is the danger on the moment frame side if i have pinned column splice even if in my analysis everything seems to be working. i used pinned connection for the column splice on my analysis also.

i have a column splice where i used pinned connection
(cap plate with bolt inside wide flange column).

Usually, in high rise construction, column splices are three feet above the floor diaphragm level. Is this your case?

What code are you using? The code may have a minimum flexural strength requirement for splices which could be hard to meet with your splice configuration.

Mike, in the U.S. column splices are typically located 4 feet above the floor deck. This is mandated by both the AISC seismic provisions and OSHA safety regulations (for fall protection at perimeter columns).

no, i dont have diaphragm..

i have an open steel stucture some pipes in
the moment frame as loads..

let's say the height of the column just 60 ft.

Ah So... Makes sense - thanks.

I am surprised that the moment frame is stable if it has a pinned column splice.

I don't see why it wouldn't be stable- there are moment connections at all the nodes (in fact, it should be stable even if you assume the base of the moment frame to be pinned).

The only thing I'd be concerned about is excessive rotation of the pin splice- this could lead to large displacements at the top of the frame and, consequently, large p-delta effects. If you took this into account in your model, then I'd say you are OK

the column drift is ok.
so i must be ok.

i am just concerned if there are codes that
restrict us from using pinned column splice.
