column splice with moment + 90 degrees orientation

I have column splice between two columns orientated at 90 degrees to one another (strong axis to weak axis). I also have a moment of 150 ft-kips.
Does anyone know of a reference that has a good example of this.

I would doubt you would find this in any book. It seems unusual to me that you would want to do this but irregardless I would think you would want to approach this using a box. I would guess that by boxing in the flanges you might be able to get this done. Just off the top of my head I would have each column with an end bearing plate. I would check the plate for bearing, punching, shearing, and bending. Then I would weld plates in between the flanges and transfer the moment through them. I would make the plates long enough to be sure the force had plenty of distance to distribute itself into the column. Mostly if I was to attemp this I would really spend some time trying to follow the force transfer. I would also probably consider doing some fea on it once I had something I thought would work.

I can asure you I dont WANT to do this , but I have an existing column at the top of a building, and I am adding a few floors to the building. The new building will have moment frames which is why I a orientating the new columns above.

The fea sounds like a good way to go.

Are you sure the existing columns can take whatever accidental moment that will be transferred into their weak axis from above?

THe moment transfered into the existing column below will not be accidental, and I will definitly have to reinforce it on the weak axis side.

Did you consider using moment connections at the top of the new columns and having partially pinned connections to the existing columns,instead of trying to transfer moment into the weak axis of the existing columns?

I tried pinning the bottom of the new column to the top of the existing but the story drift was too much, and the only way I could control it was to fix the base of the new col to the top of the existing col
