Hi,
I want to build a model which is capable of calculating a combustion process in a coal fired boiler for a specific quality coal. I am new to the field however and want to know if anyone can give me advice on what phenomena is crucial to include and where I can find useful literature?

Regards
Philip

Philip:

I have a spreadsheet that does the combustion calculations for gas, oil or coal that I could e-mail to you along with the backup documentation.. My email is at my website ... contact me.

Combustion calculations are detailed in "Steam" by Babcock and Wilcox. Google it.

well It will depend on the quality of your coal (composition) and the shape of the boiler.

You need to specify which parameters you would like to include in your model.

You should have 2 aproaches at least, one which is the heat exchanger function of your boiler, you need to account for the heat that your fluid is taking from the boiler (most of the cases is water) it will depend on the classical parameters of a heat exchanger (flow, regime, inlet temperature, exchange area and HEAT); now for the heat of the exchanger you are going to include the heat your coal is giving so you will need to know the coal quality (to get the heat of combustion) and the excess air % of the boiler, so you will need the feed rate to your boiler, and the temperature of the gases leaving the boiler.

All this can be as simple as a material balance in the boiler, and an efficency parameter (Fixed by you) or you can go in calculating every single detail and calculating everything going in the boiler that is up to you

Thanx for the info guys, especially Milton for the spreadsheet. I need to do an impact study for various coals i.e. I want to know what impact it will have on auxiliary systems (mills, emissions, maintenance cost, etc.). I'm thinking of using historic data an try to indentify so trends.

Kind Regards
