I have an existing W16X26 spanning 18'-4".with no slab. We want to make it half composite(slab on one side only).
However in order to have the slab at the desired elevation we have to add a 2 1/2" deep HSS filler which will have deck welded to it.
The question is can we weld studs through the deck to the HSS and consider the beam to be half composite?

Don't see why not. Just a few more things to check.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

As long as you verify there is enough weld between the HSS and W16 and provide adequate shear studs.

Thanks to KootK and DETstru for the feedback.
