Hi,

I am designing a composite beam. When there is an opening in the slab, we tend to deign beam as non-composite. Is there any minimum slab width requirement for designing beams as composite. I dont see any such requirement in AISC. Is slab width available only on the width of the beam flange good enough to have composite action?

Thanks

There is no reason why composite action should not be available for narrow slab widths, but there won't be very much available.

This old modern steel construction article gives some guidance on designing composite beams with slab openings.
