I have a situation where I have composite 304L(0.063")/SA 515 Gr70(0.187")plate and would like to laser cut instead water jet cutting. Can we really laser cut composite plate and what are the limitations?
The main limitation is the thickness capacity of the laser cutter. Also, depending on the HAZ at the cut, you might need to remove 1-2 mm of material at the edge. It is highly unlikely the the laser cut would affect adversely the material composition at the edge. Just imagine the heat you have to put into the weld of two opposite edges, after rolling the plate in a barrel to make a shell;- the laser cut heat is minute. However, if strict requirements have to be complied with, have a look at the ASME SA 264/265 for fabrication and testing details.
