Compressing your files for emailing 1

I sent this tip to Symmetry Solutions, Inc last week and I thought I would share it, with all of you.

To add to your list of things to do when reducing the file size. I have found Suppressing everything will help bring the file size down. I had a 19.4MB file after I suppressed everything and saved it as a new name it dropped to 454 KB...
I also took a 5MB file and did the same thing and brought it down to 15.1KB.

I think my other response turned into vaporware.

My counsellor says it is bad to suppress things. . .
It is also painful to recover them feature by feature. Not that I am into recovery or anything, you understand. . .

It was not so much the 'suppress' that helped as the 'save as..' I think. Can you save as various ways and see how muck 'suppress' saves compared to 'save as'?

The biggest savings come from building a feature which subsumes the entire feature set in a simple prism, viewing as wire frame, saving as.. and then mailing them a zip file.

Why not use WinZip to compress your files? It is much easier than modifying your parts and assemblies. DimensionalSolutions@Core.com

Winzip doesn't compress it enough. When you start getting up in the double digits (Ex:15MB) + files. Winzip won't compress it enough to send over email. Although, once I get the features suppressed, I do zip it up. It depends on the file. I do run the Unfrag utility before I do any suppressing or zipping of the features.

For very large files, there is a service on the web called WhaleMail (whalemail.com) They allow you to email files (actually more like upload them to a FTP site) and then your customers can go to their sight to retrieve it.

It does cost money, but I forget how much, but it's another option. "Happy the Hare at morning for she is ignorant to the Hunter's waking thoughts."
