I have two cylindrical solid shapes in contact with a uniaxial load compressing them together. Is there anyway I can compress them together without constraining the cylinders in x direction (i.e. allowing the shapes to expand in the x direction during compression. I have tried using coupling constraints but had no success thus far.

Thanks

First, nice picture :)
I would only model the +X of the model and constrain the cut plane in the X direction. Remember to cut the load in half. It might also be helpful to provide a rigid plate on the top and bottom to introduce the load with. I hope this helps.
