Does this connection require checking the compressive resistance of the beam web acting as column? We are using the Uniform Force Method to calculate the interface forces. If the load exceeds the capacity, where would one install a pair of stiffeners (middle of the beam/gusset interface?). Thanks in advance for your opinion.

Probably not, if you meant the compressive along the blue vertical line.

Yeah, I'd run through all the normal web checks [crippling, and so forth] associated with this type of connection. I'd size the gusset so that you didn't need a stiffener (if possible).

EDIT: By the way, are you bolting the through plate to the gusset as well as welding it to the wide flange?

Thanks for the replies.

Through plate is bolted to the gussets and beam, welded to the HSS column.
Gusset is welded to the beam.
