Looking for assistance on a small project. Using a Compumotor GV-3LE for simple motion, need to change only the velocity remotely for fine tuning. The motor turns a product 2 revolutions and stops in the same place every time, working as a pre-register. Any suggestions other than a costly Parker screen to do this? Is there a way to use a matrix on say four inputs and use a thumbwheel to select 16 possible settings? If so , how?

Do you need so much precision ? for a simple project
wouldn't a 200-400 step/rev stepper OK?

I agree, this is on an existing machine they want to run a different product on. We just need to control that one variable, it is turning a glass jar and doesn't much like it when it goes too fast.

I know that some of the older Compumotor drives had a thumbwheel input. You would have to specify three input lines as (I think it was...) octal, and you would specify an additional line as the go command. Do specify an additional line as an E-stop, while you're at it.

And double-check me for the number format for the thumbwheel input--and check the formatting on the thumbwheel itself, as there are diferent styles available (Allied Electronics, Digi-Key are possible sources)

I ran part of Disney's Beauty and the Beast on a system like that. Only had to hook the laptop up for the occasional reprogramming & troubleshooting. Oh, and we weren't moving jars. We were moving people.
 
What about using a PC or laptop to interface using Parker's software? Maybe you could then make a simple HMI application using VB to control only what you would want changed.

If I remember the software is not too complicated and runs in Windows or Dos.

...Just an idea

Thanks, all. I think the pc would work, but this is a real nut and bolt operation, could be too confusing. The Parker does have BCD inputs, so if I looked a little further I would have answered my own question.

I have done exactly what you are talking about. in my application I control a stepper motor in a web feeding application. I am however controlling the distance that the stepper pulls with each index signal. I would be happy to help you with your application. I do not however, work for free!

I did get this to work after some confusion. Seems the GV6 has a limited number of commands, compared to the larger units. I used i/o to thumbwheels, but discovered the VAR value I was using to control the velocity is a real number, this control only supports integer variables. After some IF..NIF statements to define the input, I was using &quot;VAR=3.2&quot; as the variable, translates to V3.2 as velocity. This control needs to see &quot;VARI=32000&quot; as the integer, and scales the actual V command with its' resolution, ending up with the proper &quot;V3.2&quot; as velocity.
