Concrete Pad and Steel Spreader Plate Sizing

Hi,

I'm attempting to calculate the size(mainly the depth)of a reinforced concrete pad that sits on ground with an allowable stress of 50KN/m2 and taking a load of 250KN.

Also the size (mainly the depth) a steel spreader plate for the same design parameters.

It's a bit more complicated than I though and since I'm not much of a structures person, your help will be apreciated.

The depth of the pad will be controlled by the first order effect (punching shear). Depending on the allowable bearing of whatever is under the pad, your pad will have to be a certain size and you may have to consider second order effects (bending moment), which will require tension reinforcement.

A great reference for this type of design is Design of Reinforced Concrete by McCormac. I recommend the 318-05 edition of the book to reduce costs. I think I picked up mine for the hefty sum of $1.50 (USD) plus shipping.

Since posting I've gotten my head around the design of the reinforced concrete pad. The design requires that we don't have a depth less than 300mm (which, for my application is too large).

So I'm very intrested in sizing a steel spreader plate.
Any takers?

I am trying to learn here and hiring a structural engineer does not help that, besides, it's simlpe enough not to have to hire a structural engineer! Just asking for some guidance, thats all.

Well, above it sounded like you were asking for the fish (depth/thickness) itself, and not asking for the process of the design.

You might lay out a few more parameters and describe what you are doing. Not sure the area and load you gave above is enough to help you in the process here.
