Hi all,

I don't have much experience in concrete portal design, but am working on one now. I remember coming across a detail for reinforcement on concrete wall corners that I thought might be well used in a 3 member intersection - although I don't know if there are any practical or niche-knowledge issues with what I'm proposing (see attached). Concrete dimensions are sufficient to provide required development length - plus, there is the confinement from the U-bars that's just gravy. The same details as shown in the section would apply to the orthogonal direction. Does anyone see anything particularly upsetting? Any and all thoughts appreciated! EDIT - no seismic concern.

Well, all I can say is that detail is probably more appropriate for a vertical wall intersection, the design actions intended to be resisted by a vertical wall intersection are probably completely different to those supported by a beam/column intersection.

Usually the beam bars are required to go into the column cage, as you draw it they are not confined within the joint region. Similarly they hooks on beam bars are usually required to be turned in the vertical direction to anchor the diagonal strut carrying the joint shear.

The code you are working to should be pretty clear on the requirements for joints and also give suggested details, so it should be a good place to start. Try also have a look at the various NEHRP design guides on concrete as they are a good primer on all things concrete.

I like the finished product but I question how build-able this is. It seems to me that you're asking for quite a bit of reinforcing to be embedded into your column pour.
