I have a project where a concrete roof "lid" which was supposed to be "interior" because of it receiving an architectural roof comprised on cold-formed trusses was left exposed during the winter and subjected to freeze-thaw. I haven't had this happen to me before and was wondering if there is any guidance in any ACI literature regarding this. The slab was designed without any air-entrainment.

If it is a warm and well drained roof, I don't think there is there shouldn't be much problem. If you have water proof on roof, then you should be near trouble free.

As long as it was cured under the correct temperature conditions, I'd only be concerned if there's visible spalling on the surface. Have you been able to inspect it?

1) I agree with phamENG but, unfortunately, I know of nothing official that deals with this.

2) If it's just one winter and it passes a visual inspection, I'd not be too worried about it. Realistically, for private sector job, I can envision no way in which it's likely to be palatable to have them rip out the slab out and replace it over this.

3) Even without visually apparent spalling, I'm sure that it's possible to get some level of micro crack formation inside the concrete that might impact long term durability. If you want to CYA a little more than just visual, you might ask for some basic sounding of the concrete in a few areas.

4) Anecdotally, these two things happen commonly in my frigid marketplace and, as far as I can tell, cause no serious problems.

a) balcony slabs often get no air entrainmment.

b) interior slabs get left exposed for long pauses in construction.

c) often a slab that is properly cured still winds up seeing some freeze thaw cycles without heat & hoard before it is enclosed.

Keep in my mind that, while my region is very cold, it is also very dry.
