When designing concrete sidewalks with curbing I've always preferred granite curbing (and being in the granite state it's available, but relatively expensive). Many contractors and owners prefer to just leave the concrete edge as "curbing" because it's so much cheaper. However, isn't it proper for the concrete to extend down into the soil for 12 or 16 inches along that edge (i.e. 6" wide & 12 or 16" deep along the curbside) rather than just the 4 or 5" thick sidewalk face?

Our standard turn down sidewalk is 12" below pavement.
