Condenser Sypon Discharge-Open/Closed? 1

I've assigned one combined cycle power plant project.

In this project, one question was araised on dischage type in my own.

After seal pit (sypon pit)from condenser, I would like to know, what is the "rule of thume" to select the dischage type, open channel or closed box culvert ?

Might this selection be related with the seawater level condition and site ground level.

Please help me....

I have seen both, and both used in the same flow circuit, in other words, closed culvert, and later open channel flow in the same condenser water return.

I, however, can't hazard a guess as to which is better. Sorry. I will say this, however. The closed channel was used above the maximum waterline, and the open flow channel was used below maximum (river) water flood level.
