Connect Acuvim L series power meter using modbus to a pc

I was given a Acuvim L series power meter. Was ask to install the unit on a switchgear to monitor power. That part is done. Now I have been ask to connect the unit to a PC. Found it requires modbus RTU. There is a 3 terminal connector to connect to the unit. I beleive I would need a serial adapter to connect the other end to my computer. After that I'm lost I know nothing about Modbus other than its a form of communication. If anyone knows where I can find help or done this before please let me know. Acuvim is no help.

You need an RS-232 to RS-485 converter. Modbus RTU on that device uses RS-485 communications. There are details of the data registers in the manual:

So is ther special software for modbus? Or is there something that has to be done on an exsisting computer other than connecting the Acuvim L meter to the RS-232 to RS-485 converter then connecting it to the computer. I will probably look to my IS dept for support.

Your meter usually would be connected to an RTU. RTU's typically communicate via RS-485, PC's typically communicate via RS-232. Hence the need for the converter.

Your PC needs software to display the meter data, it's not really related to modbus.

I note that the Accuenergy website offers both software and a RS-485 to USB converter. Should be all you need.

I've had good luck with B&B Electronics converters. The 485USBTB-2W unit works well for USB to 2-wire RS-485. The port on the meter is supposed to be isolated so you should not need an isolated converter on the PC end.

There is a software package for the meter. If you don't like the look or functionality then you likely have to find a package you can customize or roll your own.

I certainly appreciate the info provided. It is helpfull. I plan on attacking this project first of next week after hopefully finishing up a couple projects. I did find the software from Accuenergy website. I'll let you know what I accomplish.
