Hi,

I am kinda doing this for the first time and just worried that I may not be missing some thing big time.

I have two hollow steel structures for a substation, where I am putting class solid copper 72 " 3/8" dia air terminals mounted on a copper base plate and then connected to a #4/0 SDBC conductor. The copper conductor is connected using copper fasteners to this galvalized steel structure.

I was told that it will corrode the structure.
Is this correct?

I was also told that you will have to use Aluminum air terminals and Aluminum conductor coming down the structure as well .

Could you advise, if this is correct ? What options do I have ? Could I ask for special brackets on structures or some thing.

Copper grounding conductors are connected to galvanized steel structures in substations routinely with copper or bronze clamps. I question the need for a down conductor at all on a steel lightning mast. The structure itself is an adequate down conductor. You just need to connect a copper stinger at the base to the ground grid. Normally, a ground pad is specified at the base of a tubular steel pole for this purpose.

Yes, galvanic corrosion may occur between two dissimilar metals such as copper and galvanized steel unless the copper connector is made with an alloy suitable for this application.

Connector manufacturer could help with specific advice regarding their product line or recommending a corrosion inhibitor compound to provide extra protection.

Check out the Burndy line of silicon bronze hardware.
