It doesn't seem like a lot of people use the contact solver - only a few threads on the Inventor KB about it. None helped with this.

The contact solver stopped working on my assembly, but I'm not sure why. It was working previously. Is there any reason why the contact solver would not work on a derived component, when it did work on the original part, from which it was derived?

I don't know how it works in Inventor but in general contact requires you to identify two surfaces or axes. Perhaps when you derived the part the mating axis or surface did not update.

Don't really have that level of control in Inventor, though I can see how other systems would allow that.
It's either on or off. When On, every surface of a part is analyzed for contact with other surfaces, provided they also have contacts turned on.

Is the new derived component still marked to be part of a "contact set"? (extra icon next to it in the model browser)
Have you tried cycling the contact set parts off/on again including the derived part?

Can you post the ipt/iam files?

Stepping back from the problem, it's not necessary any more. It was useful while I was using it on the original parts but now that they are final it doesn't really matter. I will just create a pair of Positional Rep's to lock it in the open and closed positions for the sake of showing its operation on drawings. The contact solver isn't needed for that.

It would still be nice to know WHY it doesn't work, but the answer will have to wait for another day. Can't post the files from my home computer anyway.

I've been able to create derived parts, and then do FEA analyses (using various conditions for the contact sets), without issues. The derived parts are used in a seperate assembly file for the analysis, i.e. not derived from within the assembly, if that helps.

So...in short...dunno. Sorry.
