Generally at refineries that can not afford a hydorcracker a visbreaker or a delayed coker is installed. Visbreaking uses thermal cracking without catalysts and delayed coking frees up hydrogen to be used other places. With the scarcity of hydrogen in the refinery it is usually not used for heavy oil upgrading. The handbook of petroleum refining processes has just about every established refining process out there.
