In the simplest terms, a conversion coating is a pretreatment coating applied to metal that is chemically bonded to the metal substrate itself, rather than just being mechanically bonded, like primer.Alodine for aluminum is one such example. Although conversion coatings are mainly used as paint bases, they do in themselves enhance the corrosion resistance of the base metal.
